Data Centers Insulation
The role of insulation in the efficiency and reliability of cooling systems
The growth of Data Centers, accelerated by the development of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and compute-intensive applications, is increasing the focus on the efficiency and reliability of cooling infrastructures.
Temperature management is, in fact, an essential element in ensuring the operational continuity of IT equipment. In this context, even an apparently secondary component such as the thermal insulation of distribution networks and cooling systems contributes to the overall performance of the infrastructure.
Data Centers and energy efficiency: an increasingly relevant challenge
Servers and electronic equipment generate large amounts of heat that must be constantly managed and dissipated.
The increase in computing density is driving the evolution of cooling technologies: traditional air and chilled-water systems are increasingly being supplemented by liquid cooling solutions and hybrid configurations.
At the same time, at European level, increasing attention is being paid to the energy consumption and environmental impact of Data Centers. Efficiency, resource use and infrastructure performance are therefore becoming increasingly central aspects in the design and management of these facilities.
Whatever technology is used, limiting unwanted heat transfer along networks and system components contributes to the efficiency of the cooling system.
And this is where insulation comes into play.
The role of insulation in cooling systems
Chilled-water pipes, refrigeration lines, ductwork, air handling units and other components can operate at temperatures significantly different from those of the surrounding environment.
Correct insulation design makes it possible to reduce heat transfer with the external environment, helping to maintain the fluid's design conditions and limit energy losses throughout the system.
In systems operating at temperatures below ambient temperature, another fundamental aspect emerges: condensation control.
Condensation control to protect the system
When the surface temperature of a pipe or component falls below the dew point of the surrounding air, condensation can form.
In a Data Center, where electronic equipment and infrastructure must operate continuously, controlling humidity and condensation is particularly important.
Flexible closed-cell elastomeric insulation (FEF) has a structure that combines thermal performance and resistance to water vapour diffusion, characteristics that make it particularly suitable for insulating cold lines.
The correct selecting of thickness, together with careful installation and insulation continuity at critical points, helps to maintain the surface temperature within the limits specified by the design and reduce the risk of condensation formation.
Not just thermal conductivity: what to consider when choosing insulation
In Data Centers, the choice of insulation material should not be based solely on thermal conductivity.
The characteristics of the environment and the system can make several parameters relevant:
- thermal performance;
- resistance to water vapour diffusion;
- fire behaviour and smoke development;
- absence of dust and fibres;
- material composition;
- compatibility with operating conditions;
- long-term of performance;
- quality and continuity of installation.
In environments characterised by the continuous presence of sensitive electronic equipment, such as server rooms and areas housing IT infrastructure, the absence of fibres and dust released by the insulation material helps limit the introduction of particles that could potentially damage the equipment and maintain controlled environmental conditions.
Furthermore, in projects with specific requirements regarding material composition and fire safety, the use of insulation free of halogens, such as chlorine, fluorine and bromine, can offer an advantage. The absence of halogens helps reduce the risk of certain corrosive gases forming during combustion, an aspect particularly relevant in environments housing electronic components and critical infrastructure.
Elastomeric foam in Data Centers: a flexible solution
Closed-cell elastomeric foam can be used in different parts of a Data Center's technical infrastructure, through tubes, sheets, rolls, tapes and components designed to ensure the continuity of the insulation system.
The flexibility of the material also facilitates adaptation to different geometries, fittings and system configurations, an important aspect in infrastructures characterised by a high concentration of systems and technical services.
However, there is no single insulation solution suitable for every Data Center.
Operating temperatures, pipe diameters, thermo-hygrometric conditions of the environment, fluid characteristics, fire safety requirements and project specifications must be analysed as a whole in order to identify the most appropriate material, configuration and thickness.
IT-FLEX: Technical insulation solutions in Data Centers
The IT-FLEX line from EVOCELL&MOBIUS includes closed-cell elastomeric foam solutions developed for the thermal insulation of HVAC systems, refrigeration as well as other technical applications.
Depending on the characteristics of the project, the most suitable solution can be identified by considering thermal performance, vapour resistance, operating temperature, fire behaviour and specific application requirements.
For projects where material composition represents a specific requirement, IT-FLEX HF also offers a Halogen Free solution, free from chlorine, fluorine and bromine, available in tubes, sheets and tapes.
The choice of insulation thus becomes part of a broader assessment of the system, with the aim of combining efficiency, reliability and the project's technical requirements.
A Data Center project requires the right insulation solution
Every infrastructure has different operating conditions. For this reason, the choice of insulation must start with an analysis of the application rather than simply the product.
The EVOCELL&MOBIUS team supports designers, installers and operators in evaluating the IT-FLEX solutions best suited to the characteristics of the system.
